PRISON AS A FORM OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The purpose of this workshop is to expand participants¹ understandings of violence against women to include state sponsored violence and abuse by
healthcare providers. The Birth Attendants work with women during a
vulnerable time in their lives, a time when they are both pregnant and
separated from their community.  Caught in the crosshairs of this
intersection, these women are the targets of both abuse by the state as well
as their healthcare providers.  They are also subject to a great deal of
misunderstanding by their peers on the outside.  Through several activities
designed to explore true values versus internalized oppression, we will
create opportunities for challenging our beliefs about incarceration as well
as promoting growth of new ideas.

PRISON DOULA PROJECT

Volunteer, Internship, Collective Orientation

For the past five and a half years we have provided pregnancy and labor support, around-the-clock birth doula services, and post-partum care to women incarcerated at the Washington State Correction Center for Women (WCCW).

So far, we have reached over 500 women in prison, providing emotional, informational and physical support during pregnancy and birth and beyond—the support every mother deserves.

We want to share with you about the history, current programs of focus and current needs of the organization surrounding experience and education within the Prison Industrial Complex, Reproductive Justice Newtwork!

Come enjoy a night of food and entertainment in the community and support prisoner advocacy organizations.
